On Feb. 8, Leishenshan (Thunder God Mountain) Hospital, the second specialized emergency hospital built in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, was formally completed and ready to admit the first batch of patients.

The hospital has two intensive care units (ICUs), three step-down units, 27 general wards, and an operating room. Except for the two ICUs, the other 30 inpatient areas are all designed with semi-private rooms. The hospital also has specialists in electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnosis, ultrasound imaging, radiological imaging, and medical laboratory. Specialist departments are equipped with facilities for computed tomography (CT) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and can conduct remote CT and ECG diagnosis and information transmission.

Since the official start of construction on Jan. 27, tens of thousands of construction workers of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) have followed unswervingly the tight construction schedule, and have worked in full gear in the race against the epidemic. CSCEC gave its best efforts to mobilize its top construction teams, machineries, and other resources, all working around the clock. China Construction Third Engineering Bureau was named the main constructor of the Leishenshan Hospital project, while many other subsidiary companies of CSCEC were quickly deployed to the construction site to offer help.

The cutting-edge prefabricated modular building technology played a pivotal role in accomplishing such a construction miracle. The hospital features a standardized and modular design, and maximizes the use of prefabricated products to greatly reduce the workload on site and achieve maximum efficiency.

Zhang Yanling, former head of Beijing Xiaotangshan Hospital and consultant of the Leishenshan Hospital project, said that the construction standard of Leishenshan is higher than that of Xiaotangshan—the emergency facility built for the SARS outbreak in 2003. Zhang said Leishenshan has better medical facilities and adopts more advanced technologies of sewage treatment and air purification, thereby minimizing the hospital's impact on the surrounding environment.

Having faith in project success while attending to project safety, the construction workers of CSCEC have overcome all difficulties with effective coordination and teamwork spirit, and have successfully completed the construction of the Leishenshan Hospital. CSCEC construction teams will follow up the maintenance work to create favorable conditions for the scheduled opening of the hospital.

The construction workers have shown the “Chinese speed” that amazes the world, as they walked into unknown risks and worked day and night without complaint. The individual efforts of CSCEC workers have been united into one collective force to unyieldingly fight the battle against the epidemic.
