The Mahaweli Water Diversion and Irrigation Project, an essential component of the "North Western Water Diversion Project" under the Sri Lanka Irrigation Ministry, aims to enhance the livelihoods of the people. Once completed, the project will span a total length of 17.05 kilometers and an expected annual transportation volume of 130 million cubic meters after completion. The challenging 820-meter-long Nilagama Tunnel, with an excavation radius of 2.2 meters, has been a key tunnel in the overall construction process.

During the breakthrough ceremony held on June 6, Mr. U.D.C. Jayalal, Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation Sri Lanka, stated that this achievement marks a vital milestone in the development of the Northwest Line. He emphasized the positive impact it would have on the Sri Lanka economy by improving irrigation conditions and providing a clean water source, thereby enhancing the well-being of the people.

CSCEC has demonstrated a strong commitment to social responsibility throughout the project implementation process. Over 800 employees of Sri Lankan nationality have been hired, thereby promoting local employment. Besides, the program of "Up We Build" has been implemented, training more than 280 industrial skilled workers such as concrete reinforcement workers, mechanics, and surveyors, which has been widely recognized by the local community.
