China's first CFRP cable-stayed bridge opened to traffic

The Tuhaihe bridge was completed and opened to traffic recently at Xinghua Road in Liaocheng city, Shandong Province. It is the first CSCEC-built cable-stayed bridge with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) in China.

The project, across the river Tuhaihe at Xinghua Road in Liaocheng city, is planned and designed under the theme of a lotus. The total length of the bridge is about 388.3 meters, and it is divided into the east and west approach bridges and the main bridge that are 40 meters wide. The bridge is designed with six lanes and a design speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

The highlight of the project is the use of CFRP in the stay cables. CFRP is widely used in national defense, aerospace, automobile manufacturing and other fields, thus occupying an important strategic position. The bridge uses four CFRP cables, which can reduce the weight of the structure and has excellent durability and fatigue resistance. The bridge is a fan-shaped double plane bridge. The whole bridge uses 72 cables in total, with the shortest being 11.2 meters, the longest being 73.9 meters, and the weight of the heaviest cable reaching 3.12 tons.

In addition, the bridge uses an ultra-ductile concrete technology, which can be well combined with the steel beam surface, reducing rigid impact and extending the service time of the bridge. Ultra-ductile concrete has 10 times the tensile strength of conventional concrete and 200 times the fracture toughness of conventional concrete.

In the underpass, the project team replaces the traditional concrete structure with the corrugated steel structure, which is used for the first time in urban underpasses in China. Corrugated steel structure can realize factory manufacturing and on-site assembly, which can improve the construction efficiency and reducing the impact on the environment and traffic, and greatly improve durability.

After the bridge is opened to traffic, it will effectively ease the traffic pressure in Liaocheng, upgrade the urban traffic network, and enhance the efficiency of people's travel, which is of great significance to promote the high-quality development of Liaocheng's economy and society.
