To turn the Bird’s Nest into the world’s largest immersive theater in just two months, the project is huge in size, strong in professionalism, short in construction period, and has many cross operations. The project team has faced difficulties and challenges because they had to organize and coordinate the simultaneous construction of various jobs such as stage construction, lighting, sound, big screen and wire.

In order to ensure the quality of the project, managers of CSCEC with many experiences in serving large-scale celebrations were organized to form a project team. More than 300 construction teams, dozens of cranes and other equipment, and more than 10 material suppliers were organized to guarantee the smooth progress of the project.

According to the design requirements, the whole stage is 200 meters long and 100 meters deep. Three square lifting stages with a height of 3 to 5 meters are in the front area; a 174-meter-long big screen should be set up inside in the center of the stage, so that the Bird’s Nest can be transformed into the largest immersive theater in the world; and in order to capture high-altitude shots, 12-meter-long rocker arms, which can rise to a height of 10 meters, are installed on both sides of the stage.

The project team built a stage main screen frame with a total length of 174 meters, a width of 15 meters and a height of 39 meters, two auxiliary screen frames with a length of 65 meters and a height of 10.5 to 23.5 meters, and a reversible auxiliary screen frame with a length of 32 meters, a width of 8.4 meters and a height of 9 to 18 meters in the middle. Over 100,000 cubic meters of scaffolding, 2,000 tons of counterweight hoisting and 1,500 tons of steel structure installation are used for the installation of 8,000 screens.

On the basis of scientific investigation, engineers of CSCEC have applied BIM technology, established a three-dimensional model, and optimized the arrangement of components. By designing reinforced concrete foundation at the lower part of steel structure, the load of the frame on the ground is reduced to less than 10t/㎡, which met the bearing capacity requirements of the ground in the central site of Bird's Nest. In order to meet the requirements of large props on the stage, the project team doubled the carrying capacity of the stage from 500kg/㎡ to 1t/㎡.

In the whole process, CSCEC strengthened technical research and fully served the needs of the director group. It took only 50 days and nights to successfully complete stage, which was 10 days ahead of schedule.
