Algerian Cherchell Bypass Expressway—an outstanding project of China-Africa cooperation

Recently, Cherchell Bypass Expressway constructed by CSCEC in Algeria was awarded as a model project of foreign investment and economic cooperation in 2021 by Hunan Province and its experience was shared at the conference as an role model.

Designed with French standards and regulations, the project is a 18.37-km-long four-lane expressway with a design speed of 110 km per hour. Seven viaducts and nine frame bridges of the project adopt the design standards of Chinese highways, carry out bridge standardization and use simply supported prestressed T-beams, which can effectively improve seismic performance and reduce maintenance costs.

The project was completed on September 20, 2021, two months ahead of the schedule, and an clean acceptance report was signed. It is currently in the test stage. After the project is completed and opened to traffic, it will continue to improve the road circulation system of TIPAZA Province, effectively alleviate the local traffic pressure, improve the efficiency of travelers, and greatly enhance the competitiveness of the tourism industry in TIPAZA Province.

During the construction, new-energy lighting technology has been used for the first time, leading the infrastructure industry of Algeria with green and low-carbon technologies. The high pier construction technology has been used, which has effectively improved the efficiency of formwork construction compared with the previous technology, and has been gradually applied in the project.

The project has enthusiastically promoted localization of the project, which has offered more than 2,000 jobs to local employees, and the localization ratio of management staff is over 35%. At the same time, more than 500 Algerian employees are provided with systematic vocational training. The project has promoted people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Algeria through career support & exchange activities and public activities.

In addition, CSCEC has also built the overseas Luban Prize project in Algeria—the 48-km-long Tipaza Expressway, the largest infrastructure project in Algeria—the North-South Expressway, and the training base for public engineering talents in Algeria—the Public Engineering Technology School in Djelfa. CSCEC has been working hand in hand with the people of Algeria to promote the Belt and Road cooperation and build a model of win-win cooperation.
