The opening ceremony for Congo (Brazzaville) No. 1 National Highway, constructed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd (CSCEC), was held on March 1, 2016, marking the thorough connection of the completed Highway. Attending the ceremony were President Denis Sassou-Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, Chinese Ambassador Xia Huang in the Republic of Congo, and Vice President Shao Jijiang of CSCEC.
While personally hosting the ribbon-cut ceremony accompanied by Ambassador Xia and VP Shao, President Sassou awarded Knight’s Cross, the highest honor in the country, to 14 people who have made their own contributions to the completion of the Project, including Ambassador Xia, Economic and Commercial Counselor Shen Xiang, Managing Director Li Jiqin of CSCEC Overseas Operations, General Manager Li Hongyue of CSCEC West Africa Company, and representatives from Exim Bank, Sinosure and those others working for the Highway Project.
Congo (Brazzaville) No. 1 National Highway Project, with the total length of 535km, starts from Pointe-Noire, the economic center, on the west, to Brazzaville, the capital, on the east, traversing coastal plains, primeval forests, river valleys, and plateaus. As the only bi-directional four-lane national trunk road linking east and west, the Highway Project, having gone through 8-year construction period, is called by the President as “Road Leading to the Future”. It is also the biggest and most important cooperative project between China and the Republic of Congo since the two countries set up diplomatic ties 50 years ago. Upon its completion, it only takes 8 hours for the drive from Point-Noire to Brazzaville versus the past one week’s ride, which will greatly promote local economic development.
