CSCEC Collaborates with Algerian Firms Building Largest Port in Algeria

The signing ceremony of letter of intent for the investment and construction of Central New Port Project of Algeria was held on January 17 in Algeria Hotel. The Project is co-initiated by China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd (CSCEC), China Harbour Engineering Company and Algeria Harbour Group (GSP). Participating in the ceremony were, among others, officials from Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Public Works and Ministry of Finance of Algeria, as well as Chinese ambassador in Algeria. Representatives of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Algeria) Ltd, China Harbour Engineering Company (Algeria) and Ministry of Transport of Algeria signed the Framework Agreement on the foundation of the Joint Venture.
The Central New Port Project is located in El Hamdania, west of Cherchell City on the central coast and 60km from west of the Capital, Alger. With the total investment of US$3.5 billion, the Port, once completed, will have 23 quay berths with the overall length of the quays being 6,320m. It covers an area of 1,032 hectares with the floor space for logistics of 2,000 hectares. The annual throughput accounts for 6,300,000 standard containers of 20 feet in size plus 25,700,000 tons of bulk cargoes. The Port will become the largest one in Algeria and the main entrepot along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea upon its completion.
Based on the Agreement, the JV is to be formed by CSCEC, China Harbour, and Algeria’s state-own enterprises, private businesses and operators to undertake the construction of the Central New Port Project, with the Chinese side holding 49% shares. The JV is to work on the design, construction, operation of the Port Project and management of the facilities in the Port.
The signing of the letter of intent for the Central New Port Project signifies the successful moves taken by CSCEC in implementing national strategy of “One Belt One Road” and building a new engine in its overseas development.
